"I don't remember
lighting this cigarette
and I don't remember
if I'm here alone
or waiting for someone."

new meaning

Madame Peripetie explores the boundaries between fashion,
sculpture and the human body, experimenting with various fabrics and patterns;
whilst infusing high-fashion elements with abstract and conceptual
ideas, creating an eccentric escapade of color and texture. In her work she is
focusing mainly on the interaction between body, language and new media.
Her inspirations include surrealism, dadaism as well as the new wave era of the
80s, British post punk scene and the avantgarde theater of Robert Wilson.

magic notes in my ears
"Recently, I have begun translating weather data collected in cities into musical scores, which are then translated into sculptures as well as being a source for collaboration with musicians. These pieces are not only devices that map meteorological conditions of a specific time and place, but are also functional musical scores to be played by musicians. While musicians have freedom to interpret, they are asked not to change the essential relationship of the notes to ensure that what is still heard is indeed the meteorological relationship of weather data."

Urban Weather Prairies - Symphonic Studies in D
Reed, wood, data, 16’x15’x15’, 2009

Urban Weather Prairies is based on data collected in Omaha, Nebraska, during a 2-month period (May /June 2008), while I was an Artist in Residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. I chose to translate the data I collected in the format of an orchestra as a way to more truthfully articulate the somewhat idiosyncratic way I was making sense of my daily weather observations. Just like each instrument in a symphony plays part of the score, each sculpture and wall piece tells part of the story, with the entirety of the piece coming together through the larger behavioral patterns that slowly emerge over time. The wall space uses the rectangle as varies maps of Nebraska or urban centers of Nebraska.

map
Works by artist Shannon Rankin. Maps, pins, glue.

Maps inspire me. They are made of paper. They are beautifully detailed. They are so often ephemeral in both meaning and form. They are the everyday metaphors that speak to the fragile and transitory state of our lives and surroundings.
In my work I create installations, collages and drawings that use the language of maps to explore the connections among geological and biological processes, patterns in nature, geometry and anatomy. Using a variety of distinct styles I intricately cut, score, wrinkle, layer, fold, paint and pin maps to produce revised versions that often become more like the terrains they represent. These new geographies explore notions of place, perception and experience, suggesting the potential for a broader landscape and inviting viewers to examine their relationships with each other and the world we share.
